The use and knowledge of gonad shielding by radiographers in the medical imaging department of a general hospital.

Abstract

OBJECTIVES The objectives of the dissertation were to survey radiographers about their use and knowledge of gonad shielding at a local public general hospital and to make essential recommendations for the better use of gonad shielding which will yield better gonad protection for the patients under x-ray examinations. METHODOLOGY Diagnostic radiographers were surveyed using a designed questionnaire designed by the researcher for this study. Data was analyzed using standard statistical analysis techniques. RESULTS Respondents often make use of a gonad shields as part of their everyday practice. When the respondents were asked about their perception of gonad shielding they said that they had good knowledge but actual results showed otherwise. There was no definite trend between level of knowledge and qualifications or years of experience. The respondents also showed interest in learning more about the use and effectiveness of gonad shields. CONCLUSION It is recommended that gonad shielding be given more importance during the education of student radiographers. Practicing radiographers need to be given more training about gonad shielding with the aid of lectures and written protocols should also be made available at the department so that radiographers can follow them and improve their use of gonad shielding.
