Radiography : a preferential profession : does it favour a gender?

Abstract

Objectives This study was undertaken to identify the reasons why a person chooses radiography as a profession. To study the gender composition of the present and future radiographer community in Malta and to establish if there is or has been a gender shift. Methodology The research design used in this study was quantitative and qualitative. Two self-reporting questionnaires were the research tools used; one questionnaire was compiled for radiographers and one for student radiographers. Both questionnaires had quantitative and qualitative questions. There was an average response return of 83% from both categories of respondents. All responses were analysed separately for each question for both categories of respondents. Results The results obtained from both questionnaires pertaining to the influence of choice of radiography as a profession did not show a significant gender bias from either the radiographers or the students. Reasons for choosing radiography produced a gender bias for different statements. Most radiographers are satisfied with their profession and would recommend the study of radiography. Retrospectively, a percentage of male radiographers and students of both genders are not satisfied with their initial choice of profession and are considering a change. The gender composition of radiographers has shifted, with the previous male radiographer dominance declining in the last ten years, producing a significant gender shift towards females, as more females than males are pursing the study of radiography. Conclusions Based on all the results of this study Radiography does not favour a particular gender, however more females than males are taking up the study of Radiography. Researcher recommends that adequate financial packages, reflecting the level of studies and responsibilities, together with a progressive managerial policy, should be implemented as an encouragement for present radiographers and as an initiative for prospective radiographers of both genders to pursue the profession of a Radiographer.
