Abstract: The main aim of this study is to explore the nutritional recovery strategies used by U17 football players in Malta. A seven-day self-administered food diary was used to collect nutritional information on the players’ post-training/match nutritional intake. Nutritional data obtained from the food diaries (FD) were analysed and compared to recommended guidelines. As regards to quantity of calorie intake, the majority of players (96%) were significantly at a surplus. Moreover, quality of nutrient intake was lacking for most of the participants. Carbohydrate and protein intake were both at a deficit when compared to recommended guidelines, 76% and 88%, respectively. The immediate intake (0 – 30 minutes) post-training/match was overlooked by most players (76%). After analysing the FD, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a selection of players to gain deeper insight into their reasons for partaking in such dietary practices. Lack of knowledge about post-training/match nutrition emerged as a main theme. Furthermore, most of the participants were not aware that such guidelines exist. Most of the participants were willing to follow guidelines and engage in recommended dietary practices to improve their recovery process, only if they had adequate information and education beforehand. Further research is needed to enhance dietary practices in U17 football players, including strategies to enhance education among young football players, explore knowledge translation into practice and identify barriers that impinge on the consumption of quality nutrients post-training/match.
