Abstract: Purpose: This study is an evaluation of CT c-spine referrals at the A & E department of a local general hospital. The main aim was to evaluate the referral criteria currently being used and investigate whether the doctors are aware of the referral guidelines for imaging issued by the EU. These guidelines are designed so that doctors are more selective when referring patients for a CT scan. Method: Using quantitative analysis, this study involved distributing questionnaires to to doctors working in the A & E department. An evaluation of current local referral criteria was carried out and were compared to several existing guidelines. Results: Awareness is present in certain areas while lacking in others. The mechanism of injury is a major factor affecting the doctors' decision. Availability of the modality also plays a role. Conclusion: The EU referral guidelines should be implemented in the A&E department to standardize the referrals being conducted by the doctors. This reduces the amount of referrals and therefore the patient radiation dose.
