Abstract: Purpose: The aim of this study was to review the role of continuous professional development (CPD) within radiography in order to explore what the radiographers understood by the term CPD and to seek their opinion on the importance of CPD as well as to identify any barriers which may limit participants from undertaking CPD. Methodology: A semi-structured questionnaire was developed, which consisted of open and closed-ended questions. The use of closed-ended questions enabled the respondent to give factual answers while open-ended questions allowed for respondents to express their opinions. In such way data loss was kept to a minimum. Results: One hundred and six questionnaires were circulated so many were returned giving a response rate of 82%. The data showed that CPD was important to most of the radiographers; data also identified which type of CPD activity was considered as the most useful by the radiographers. The lack of financial support was the most cited to limit radiographers from participating in CPD. The data collected also indicated the preferred time for radiographers to willingly undertake CPD, together with the preferred areas in radiography for CPD activities. Conclusion: The study concluded that the participants acknowledge that CPD will enhance skills and competence. It was also concluded that CPD is time consuming and therefore impede radiographers from participating. However, motivation from line management and financial support will enhance the participation rate of individuals. It was also recommended that if participation rate in CPD activities is to be increased, such constraints need to be addressed and CPD needs to be organised according to radiographers needs to enhance maximum participation.
