Abstract: | The objective of this study was to investigate whether persons with a physical impairment are engaged in PA, PE, and sport, and if they are not, what is holding them back from being physically active. For data collection, interviews were conducted with different individuals involved in the field of disability sport, such as, PE teachers, coaches, club officials and athletes with physical impairment. Results revealed that there are challenges that are holding physically impaired athletes back from fully developing their PL like able-bodied children. However, it was additionally found that some physically impaired individuals also find strong support which helps them to take part in PA, PE, and sport. Data further revealed that in Malta, there is a lack of organisations, such as, sport clubs that cater for the physically impaired. Moreover, participation is very minimal. Nonetheless, despite these challenges, there has been much improvement. It was suggested to offer further opportunities to continue to improve and engage more physically impaired students with PA, such as, promoting the benefits of participation thereby ensuring a holistic approach where everyone does their part. This includes the Government, Senior Management Teams (SMTs) in schools, coaches, club officials, the family of the physically impaired, and the actual willingness of the physically impaired person. |
