Abstract: Purpose The role of the radiographer has long been recognised throughout the years. In fact, ultrasound was one of the first areas where radiographers developed their role. Therefore, the researcher wanted to investigate role development of the radiographer in ultrasound, in a general hospital in Malta. Objectives The objectives of this study were to evaluate the current role of the radiographer locally and compare this role to other existing roles in the literature. Secondly, to gather an insight as to whether radiographers in a general hospital would be willing to develop their role and why. The third objective was to determine the forces which would enable role development to occur. Methodology This study was a cross sectional, non-experimental survey design consisting of both quantitative and qualitative types of research. Data was collected by means of a self-designed questionnaire, which was distributed to 1 00 radiographers in a local general hospital. Out of these, 72 respondents took part in this study. Results From the results obtained, it was of great importance to note that radiographers were dissatisfied with the current role of the radiographer in ultrasound. On the other hand, radiographers showed enthusiasm towards developing their role, but depicted radiologists as the main barrier, which consequently could hinder them from furthering their role in ultrasound. Nevertheless, literature, as well as the results demonstrated in this study, revealed that with adequate training and education, there should be no barrier impeding upon radiographers in developing their role in ultrasound. Conclusions Greater awareness should be implemented in order to enhance any changes to occur and allow radiographers to begin performing ultrasound, as it is happening abroad.
