Abstract: Purpose Due to the increase in the elderly population the radiographer must have a good knowledge about the elderly patient to receive the best possible patient care. The radiographer must be aware of the psychological and physiological effects of ageing so that s/he can meet the social, physical and psychological needs of the elderly patient. Apart from patient care there are also communication skills. Good communication skills are essential for high quality, effective and safe medical practice. It involves observing, listening and explaining. Effective communication is part of the patient care process and this must start upon meeting the patient. The patient should always be the focus of attention. Research Objectives The objectives of this study are to evaluate the radiographers perception with regards to patient care when dealing with geriatrics and to analyse, whether the local radiographers are aware or not of how to communicate effectively with geriatric patients. Methodology The objectives of this study were achieved through data collection from all the radiographers working at the imaging department in the General State Hospital of Malta. They were asked to complete a questionnaire that explored patient care and communication skills in relation to geriatrics. Results and Conclusion This study concludes that Maltese radiographers working at the imaging department in the General State Hospital of Malta do optimise patient care and communication skills with geriatric patients. The objectives that were put forward at the beginning of the research process were reached.
