| Abstract: | This research project analyses how the Schengen acquis is dealing with its main challenges; these being immigration and security. It not only evaluates the laws as they are, but also what proposals are in place, and what amendments can be done. The aim is to analyse whether the Schengen acquis is reaching its full potential, and since the author feels like there are certain areas where the law is falling short, to come up with possible improvements to the Schengen acquis since the author feels that there are certain areas where the law is falling short. This paper also analyses the impact of the temporary introduction of border controls on the Schengen area and its citizens. Furthermore, it analyses the Commission paper ‘The Future of Europe’ and its implications for the future of Schengen. Through this paper, it is clear that in order to achieve the secure external borders that are so desperately needed, Schengen states need to start working with each other and also with the rest of the world, so as to be able to share information. Additionally, Schengen legislators need to capitalize on the vast potential that today’s technology offers. |
