Abstract: Introduction Diagnostic imaging is the Iargest source of radiation to humans as the use of radiation emitting devices has increased. Due to advancements in technology it is now easier to over-expose the patient while obtaining good quality images, and without having to repeat the exam. Ionizing radiation damages tissues by ionization, leading to mutations and genetic effects. Ionizing radiation may also have stochastic and deterministic effects which may be reduced by applying radiation protection. Since radiographers have extensive control over radiation protection, radiation protection knowledge is important. If the patient's exposure decreases, occupational dose decreases as well. Research aims The main purpose of this research was to evaluate radiographers' knowledge of radiation protection of both patients and staff. Methodology The research design used is a non-experimental, prospective study. Data was collected through a survey by means of a questionnaire which was distributed to fifty radiographers working in a public general hospital in Malta. Results The results obtained indicate that the radiographers participating in this study have adequate basic knowledge in radiation protection such as radiation protection policies, the basic principles, the ALARA principle, magnification, patient dose, and exposure factors. However, they lack knowledge on specific areas. Conclusion Based on the findings of this study, conclusions and recommendations on how radiographers' knowledge in radiation protection can be improved were drawn.
