Abstract: Literature shows clearly that nowadays Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods are not amongst the preferred methods when compared to other family planning alternatives, notwithstanding the high effective rate when NFP methods are used correctly. As a result, this study set out to explore couples' perceptions regarding the use of NFP methods. The tool used in this quantitative study consisted of a self-administered questionnaire composed of both close and open ended questions. The questionnaire was distributed to 38 couples amounting to 76 participants (i.e. 38 females and 38 males) who were chosen conveniently. These couples were attending a course carried out by the Parentcraft Department at Karen Grech Hospital, Gwardamangia. The final sample consisted of 26 couples, adding to a total of 52 respondents. Data revealed that the majority of the respondents were able to distinguish between the terms 'Family Planning' and 'Natural Family Planning'. The participants were mostly familiar with the temperature method, followed by the Billings method. The symptothermal method and the lactational amenorrhoea method were the least NFP methods known by the participants. Several advantages and disadvantages associated with NFP methods were highlighted by the participants. 'Religion', 'health-concern', 'other couples' positive feedback', 'free of charge' and 'problems to conceive' were amongst the positive factors that might influence the participants choice in using NFP methods. The findings of the study revealed that overall there is lack of awareness on the subject. Participants felt the need to further their knowledge and they gave several recommendations on how this can be done. By improving the quality and the correct level of information, people will become more aware of the benefits of NFP methods. This might serve to bring about a more positive perception towards the use of NFP methods.
