Abstract: This study aimed at exploring the midwives' experiences in caring for teenage mothers focusing on the antenatal period. Literature on teenage pregnancies is vast; however, few studies have been found with regards to the experiences of midwives when caring for pregnant teenagers. In this qualitative small-scale study, a semi-structured interview was used to fulfil the aim of the study. Eight midwives working at the Antenatal sector, which includes the Antenatal Ward, Antenatal Clinic and the Parentcraft Unit at the Main State Hospital, participated in the study. Ethical permissions and signed informed consent were considered as crucial for the study. Interviews were tape-recorded. Data was transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis yielded 5 themes with sub-themes categorized under each theme. In this study it was found that midwives care for pregnant mothers using a non-judgemental attitude. They related their experiences as highly sensitive, since pregnant teenagers encounter additional needs. Furthermore they try to build sound relationships by being with the teenage mothers and by referring them to other health professionals if needed. Limitations and possibilities were highlighted when it came to supporting mothers. The midwives commented on information giving, which referred to the importance of parentcraft lectures and the significance of increasing awareness in pregnant teenagers to prevent further pregnancies together with the prevention of sexually transmitted infections. The present and future through the eyes of a midwife refers to the emotions midwives experience as they are aware of the emotional burden and hardship these teenage mothers go through at such tender age. These results were discussed and compared with the literature review. Recommendations include the need to improve the quality and quantity of information given to teenagers regarding sexual health and the need for more human and technical resources so that midwives would be able to increase individualised support. Further research is needed to explore the midwives' experiences in caring for teenage mothers focusing on the perinatal period, which includes the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period.
