Abstract: Rights of free movement initially stemmed from the desire to achieve economic objectives in the sphere of a common market. The gradual abolition of border controls marked a significant step in this direction. Yet the actual right of freedom of movement had to be supplemented by accompanying rights that would facilitate mobility and enhance the status of the individual and his family. These rights reflect inter alia the· civil, social and political needs of the individual and are embraced within the general concept of respect for fundamental human rights. Legislation on the various aspects of freedom of movement, both as regards Member State nationals and third country nationals, is likewise geared to protect persons against discrimination and to foster a European identity. The concept of European citizenship has helped forge a direct link between the 'person' and the European Union and has placed the individual at the heart of European integration. This work aims to highlight the salient features of rights of free movement of persons and their families, by tracing the progress achieved since the budding of such rights.
