Abstract: This is a study about the principle of proximate cause, particularly of the role it plays in the context of insurance. It exposes the rules which are to be adopted when it comes to the enforcement of the doctrine and illustrates the practical applications of such maxims by reference to case law. A clear explanation is undertaken of the kinds of perils which are relevant to the principle; moreover, a distinction is drawn between the various possible types of causes of loss and the implications of each are carefully outlined. The final chapter delves into the concept of the burden of proof and presents a rendering of the standard which is required in relation to particular claims. The aim of the thesis is to provide a guideline and a source of reference to all those who are proficient in the business of insurance, equally from the legal as well as from the practical aspect.
