Abstract: This dissertation centres round the translation into English of extracts from John A. Bonello’s Is-Sitt Aħwa with an emphasis on translating effect. Being a work of young adult literature, the Introduction gives a short summary of the development of children’s literature in Malta, as well as some background information regarding the author and the plot so as to better put the reader in the picture. The Literature Review then outlines the framework chosen for the translation. This chapter is subdivided into three main parts. The first focuses on Umberto Eco’s notions of interpretation and negotiation in translation and on the importance of focusing on effect. The second outlines the work of some of the most prominent theorists working within the field of translating children’s literature. The third discusses some of the more practical issues the translator was faced with during the translation of the extracts chosen, namely the issue of domestication versus foreignisation, the addition of explanatory material, the translation of names, the translation of dialect and the translation of poetry. Chapter 3, the Methodology, expands on the skopos of this dissertation and shows the reasoning behind the choice of the extracts that were translated. It is followed by the Translation itself and then the Analysis, which discusses in more detail how the translator applied or rejected the theories and issues mentioned in the Literature Review in the translation in question in an attempt to find a balance between changing certain aspects of the source text in order to preserve effect and respecting the source text and its cultural milieu as well as the intelligence of the adoloscent reader. Lastly, the Conclusion gives a brief summary of the translation process as well as the main challenges that were encountered.
