Abstract: This dissertation shall deal with the cult of the saints in Malta and what effect they had on Maltese society during the period starting with 1400 and ending in 1699. The effect it had on Maltese society shall be drawn mostly from a transcript of Mgr. Pietro Dusina’s apostolic visit in 1575 and Giovanni Francesco Abela’s Della Descrittione di Malta written in 1647. As an introduction, the first chapter shall deal with the cult of the saints in general: where it came from, and what it was influenced by. Then, a number of cults will be examined, firstly those of St Paul and the Virgin Mary, whom are described in two respective chapters. The following chapter shall deal with the cults of the six oldest known parishes in Malta.
