Abstract: A descriptive quantitative study was carried out in order to discover the adolescents' knowledge on fertility control. Thirty-one students were chosen randomly from a convenient group of 93 students who were eligible to participate in the study. The participating students were either male or female, aged between 17-19 years and were in the first year Diploma nursing course at the Institute of Health Care, University of Malta. A questionnaire was group administered to the participants. A 100% response rate was obtained. The results showed that the participants have some knowledge regarding fertility control. However the respondents did not seem to have in depth knowledge on the human reproductive system. The findings also indicated a high rate of adolescents' sexual involvement. Male and female respondents identified parents and friends respectively as the primary informative sources on the human reproductive system. Participants also claimed that they derived fertility control information mainly from school. Adolescents' however preferred to receive fertility control information from parents and health professionals. It is recommended that adolescents are provided with knowledge regarding fertility control and reproduction. Educational programs should target misconceptions regarding the functioning of the human reproductive system. In addition the efficiency of artificial and natural means of fertility control should also be tackled in depth with male and female adolescents. It is important to point that the nurse besides providing fertility control information to adolescents he/she could help adolescents to adopt healthy sex'Ual behaviors by integrating their fertility control and reproductive knowledge in their sexual lives. Moreover further research studies have been suggested on this important but highly neglected subject.
