Abstract: The aim of the study was to evaluate the nurses' knowledge and perceptions on bladder training post-CV A. All registered nurses working at the general medical wards at a state general hospital were invited to participate. A self-administered questionnaire was used as a research tool, and a response rate of 75% (n=53) was obtained. Quantitative data was analysed and inputted by using Microsoft Excel and SPSS for statistical data. The results show that the majority of the nurses who participated in the study had a good knowledge and a positive attitude towards bladder training post-CV A. The participants believe that after a stroke, the patient can regain continence. A good mean score in the questionnaires was attained, but it appears that the more years of experienced one possessed, the less knowledge one had, so a negative correlation was obtained. Not all participants claimed to have received education about bladder training. Degree nurses had the highest mean mark, followed by Diploma nurses and Traditional nurses respectively. This could be due to the fact that nowadays, continence promotion awareness has increased more than the past years in the local pre-registration nursing course and also in the hospital wards. The majority of the nurses agreed with further education programs on bladder training to increase the awareness of continence promotion so that the use of nappies on stroke patients suffering from urinary incontinence will be reduced. A continence promotion team was also encouraged by the majority of the nurses to aid the nurses in the wards to promote continence to their patients. The study concluded that there is also a need for more continence advisors to give professional help to the nurses in their clinical practice of continence promotion post-CV A. Further nursing practice, education and research were recommended so that bladder training will be effectively promoted in the wards.
