Abstract: This exploratory descriptive study was designed to elicit Maltese nurses' perceptions on the provision and promotion of comfort measures for post-operative patients. A survey approach was used. Data was collected by means of audio-taped semi-focused 15 minute interviews. with a convenience sample of 8 registered nurses. working on surgical wards in St. Luke's Hospital. Interviews were fully transcribed and content analysis of the data was carried out. The findings suggest that the participants lacked awareness and/ or knowledge about the effects the provision of planned. deliberative comfort measures might have on patient's outcome. that is how these strategies might effect the patient holistically and thus minimise post-operative pain and discomfort. Findings also suggest that these nurses considered the provision of comfort as being of utmost importance, but paradoxically, these were not usually included in the nursing care assessment and schedule due to perceived time constraints. staff shortages and lack of resources. Moreover. the nurses seemed to devalue the importance of 'general nursing care' to promote comfort and protect the patient from enduring further pain and discomfort. It was also felt that there was a reluctance to act autonomously in making decisions about nursing care and comfort strategies and to act as the patient's advocate. Findings are discussed in the light of previous research and implications for nursing education. practice and management. Areas for future nursing research are suggested.
