Abstract: Pain has plagued mankind since the beginning of time. For over 2000 years scientists have worked unceasingly to unravel the mystery of pain and to provide relief. To the present day, some pain has defied all efforts made to relieve it. Through the ages, pain has been a subject of inquiry for philosophers, sociologists, psychologists, anthropologists, theologians and health care professionals. In an endeavour to understand pain, academics have presented it as a "problem", a "puzzle , and a "challenge" .
