The European Union and the recognition on the independent state of Kosovo

Abstract

This study, related to Kosovo's emergence as a new state, focuses on the country's struggles with obtaining international recognition from the EU Member States. An extensive literature review is presented on the historical events that led to Kosovo’s secession, followed by a commentary on the challenges that Kosovo still faces. Furthermore, this study equally delves into the relations between Kosovo and the main international organisations, as well as the international reception to Kosovar independence in 2008. Following the research methodology, is an in-depth analysis of Kosovo’s aid from the European Union, as well as a study on why some of the European Union’s Member States still refuse to recognise Kosovar independence.

This dissertation’s main aims are to answer whether the European Union as a governing body as well as a legislative tool in Europe, has helped Kosovo maintain itself as a new nation. Moreover, the EU is not just the Union itself, but it is also its 27 Member States. Another part of this study is to look into the reasons behind the decisions that some EU Member states have taken to not recognise Kosovo’s independence. Insights will be provided on whether such reasons hold ground or are unfair towards Kosovo’s prerogative.
