Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to evaluate how far the EU-Japan trade relationship has developed since the post Second World War period and what are the main EU economic gains from adopting its trade policy on Japan. These two questions are the basis of this dissertation on the political economy development of the EU-Japan trade relationship. The introduction of this dissertation discusses the significance of GATT towards the liberal political economy which the EU promotes in its trade policy. Furthermore, the introduction describes how the EU‘s single market is attractive to other major trading partners like Japan. Moreover, at the end of the chapter, the importance of Japan as a trading partner for the EU is identified in the fact that 600,000 jobs in the EU were tied to EU exports to Japan. In the literature review, there is an account of the historical background of the EU-Japan trade relations starting from the postSecond World War period. The historical background gives an overview of trade developments between the EU and Japan. Afterwards, the literature review deals with the relevant theoretical perspectives of the International Political Economy and trade for this dissertation. The descriptions of the strategy, design and research methods utilised to conduct this research are all dealt with in the methodology chapter. In the analysis chapter, the impact of a series of events and landmarks (Nixon shocks, Uruguay Round, Hague declaration, common commercial policy, Single European Act, Economic Partnership Agreement, the U.S. influence) on the trade relationship between the EU and Japan is discussed. In addition, the shift in trade patterns between EU and Japan from inter-industry trade towards intra-industry trade along the years was analysed. The shift in trade patterns led to a shift in economic gains such as productive gains for businesses and welfare gains for consumers. Finally, the findings in the conclusion demonstrate that Japan has become a similar developed global player like the EU. Moreover, the findings also demonstrate that the EU‘s free trade policy on Japan can contribute to the EU‘s GDP growth and growth in some of the EU‘s sectors (textile, motor vehicles, and chemicals). This is proven through the estimates issued by the European Commission‘s report on the economic impact of the Economic Partnership Agreement between EU and Japan.
