Nurses' knowledge of the care to be provided to patients receiving blood transfusion

Abstract

The aim of this study was to view nurses' lmowledge pertaining to the care to be provided during blood transfusion. Transfusion is given to patients with anaemia or chronic blood loss to maintain the normal oxygenation needs to the whole body (Davies and Brozovich 2001). The literature reviewed lacked studies about the knowledge of nurses regarding transfusion care, therefore this research study was focused on the knowledge of nurses who encounter several blood transfusion in the general hospital in Malta. Research information used in the literature review mainly focused on the practical aspect of transfusion care. Therefore, the researcher constructed an interview schedule. By using the constructed interview schedule, a convenient sample of 10 nurses were interviewed to explore their knowledge related to blood transfusion. Results from the present research study revealed that respondents lacked knowledge on the topic when compared to the reviewed literature. The lack of knowledge was predominant in to the reactions likely to occur as a result of transfusion. Respondents replied by mentioning signs and symptoms of reactions that might occur. From this study it seems that on the whole, more education is needed to increase the awareness of the seriousness of complications and hence adequate nursing care. Education about patient assessment and monitoring during transfusion is also needed.
