Abstract: Purpose: This study aims to critically evaluate the application of various revenue management techniques by 4 and 5 star hotels in Malta and to assess the influence of the hotels’ characteristics on their revenue management practices. This study also strives to examine the link between the revenue management function and the finance function. Design: The objectives of this study were attained by conducting semistructured interviews revenue managers or those managers entrusted with the responsibilities of revenue managers of 4 and 5 star hotels in Malta. Findings: This study shows that although a good application of revenue management practices exist within the four and five-star hotels in Malta, there is room for improvement, especially within the four-star category. Some hotels are not aware of the benefits that some nonpricing tools provide and do not make use of a computerised revenue management software. This study also revealed that the hotel’s location and size have an influence on the revenue management practices applied. The findings also show that in some hotels, the link between the accountancy and revenue management function is not present. Conclusion: As the hospitality industry will remain to be fundamental for the Maltese economy, it is important that hotels seek a deeper insight in Revenue Management, especially those in the lower category. Value: This study aims to seek awareness on the importance of revenue management practices within the hospitality industry. It recommends that more hotels should start implementing these practices in order to remain competitive in the market.
