Abstract: This dissertion covers: (i) A brief introduction concept 'education' of about which, the meaning and aims physical education of is the an offshoot, thus sharing a number of major characteristics and responsibilities. (ii) A symposium of the nature of physical education including its aims and objectives. Particular focus is put upon the aim of education for leisure. (iii) An abstract analysis of the evolution and development of leisure and an interpretation of the various factors determining one' choice of leisure pursuits. (iv) The characteristics of recreation: are they allied or distinct from those of physical education? An account of the organizations responsible for planning and providing for recreation. (v) The significance of physical education for Maltese youths. Are local schools 13xploi ting this field in order to educate youths for leisure? This analysis is supplemented by suggestions and possible solutions for an advanced assumption of the leisure aim of physical education.
