Abstract: Interest in the processes of both language acquisition and second language learning is very recent. Such a study is constantly becoming more scientific, taking into consideration developmental, cognive and psychological aspects. The study of childrens' errors throws light on the types of cognitive and linguistic processes forming part of the language learning process. It also serves as feedback to the teacher and it guides future teaching methods and approaches in the hope of obtaining better results. This study is divided into three parts: Part One deals with the teaching of languages and the analysis of errors; Part Two analyses orthographical, morphological and lexical errors committed by 221 Maltese students of Italian in two State Schools; Part Three discusses the problems both Maltese teachers and students of Italian face. This part tries to give also some prospects in the teaching of Italian in Malta.
