The use of Maltese and English as media of instruction at Primary School level (Year IV)

Abstract

This study investigates language use (Maltese and English) at year four primary school level. This is done through lessons analyses. It also looks at the perceptions of teachers and heads of 23 schools in the state, church and private sectors. The literature review deals with the issue of bilingual education and code switching in Malta. The empirical research consists of a number of observation sessions, and the recording and transcription of nine lessons in three subjects: Maltese, English and Maths. These are analysed in detail in order to determine which language is used when, by whom, and for which purpose. A questionnaire is also used in order to find out the language use in twenty three different schools (fifteen state schools, five church schools and three private schools).
