Abstract: Phyllis Coard was a social worker, teacher, university lecturer, co-founder of the National Women’s Movement in Grenada (1977–1983), and activist in the struggle to win rights for women, children and the impoverished. Her work as a novelist and poet developed during her experience of persecution over nearly seventeen years of political imprisonment after the collapse of the Grenada Revolution in 1983.
