Abstract: This dissertation aims at providing the necessary data for the development of an effective AIDS/HIV education programme in Malta. Through questionnaires, we have assessed Post-Secondary students' knowledge and attitudes towards AIDS/HIV. Parents' views regarding AIDS/HIV education have been gathered through mail questionnaires. This work also includes a review of current AIDS/HIV educational programmes in Malta. Theories on AIDS/HIV education are discussed, upon which practical suggestions for effective AIDS/HIV prevention programmes are given. Our findings show that students have a high level of knowledge on AIDS/HIV although some misconceptions regarding transmission still exist. This coincides with the findings of similar studies conducted abroad. The students' attitudes towards people with AIDS/RN are generally positive. Both students and parents are in favour of AIDS/HIV education in schools. Therefore efforts should be made to improve current AIDS/IIlV educational programmes in order to provide necessary information as well as develop the skills needed to avoid high-risk behaviour.
