Abstract: This study was carried out with 16-18 year old adolescents attending one particular post secondary school in Malta. In order to gather the data 38 adolescents were approached and asked to fill a self-administered questionnaire. The data collection was carried out on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th December 2007. The results indicate that almost all the participants had experimented with alcohol before reaching the age of 16. The majority of the participants usually drink on weekends. Spirits and Liquors are by far the adolescents' favourite alcohol drinks. The findings also revealed that a high percentage of the participants binged or got drunk. These figures were higher than those of the 1999 and 2003 ESPAD surveys. The results also showed that most adolescents started drinking when they were 13 years old, binging when they were 14/15 years old and getting drunk when they were of 15 years old. As regards to knowledge, slightly more than 60% of the participants managed to answer correctly at least four of the statements about alcohol. The majority also knew the legal ages to drink and to buy alcohol. The results showed that peer pressure is the factor which influences the participants' drinking patterns the most. The price of alcohol emerged as another factor which influences the participants' drinking patterns. The small sample was the main limitation of this study. Future research studies should try to study in further detail the relationship between alcohol consumption and knowledge about alcohol. The effect of the media on the adolescents' drinking patterns should also be studied in further detail.
