Abstract: This work is divided into 6 units end each of these units deals with a particular aspect of the Maltese Banking system. Unit 1 deals with the history of Maltese Banking, covering the period 1800-1981. The historical background helps students to understand better the various institutions that form part of the banking system. The structure of the local Banking system is explained in Unit 2 and is further illustrated in Appendix 5. The Central Bank of Malta, the Commercial Banks, Long Term Financing Institutions end other Small Financial Institutions are dealt with in Units 3,4,5 end 6 respectively. Throughout these lest 4 units, I tried to explain as clearly as possible the functions of these financial institutions and how they help the various sections of the population. Special emphasis have been made on the services that local Banks offer to the industrial and commercial sectors end how these promote the well-being of the entire Maltese nation.
