The biology of orchids with reference to those from the 'Wied il-kbir' system

Abstract

This work constitutes a study of the biology of local orchids, with particular reference to the orchids from the 'Wied il-Kbir' system of valleys. It is presented in a form which directs both students and teachers to take up an investigative, experimental approach towards botany. The general morphology of the orchids is first discussed. This is then followed by an analysis of various aspects of the orchids' mode of living. Aspects concerning the genetics, physiology, reproduction, nutrition and the ecology of orchids, together with the latter's relation ships with the biotic and abiotic environments, are discussed. The distribution of the orchids of the named valley system is given in map form. A review of the experimental techniques used and other relevant literature giving details of the experimental methods used and/or suggested, is also given. A bibliographical list, a glossary of terms, and an index, are also included.
