Abstract: Democratic citizenship is a complex issue since it implicates the involvement of all the stakeholders from the children to the school administration. The latter's outlook regarding democratic citizenship in primary schools greatly affects the teaching and practice of democracy in schools. In this way, this thesis 'Schooling for Democratic Citizenship' aimed at gathering the necessary data on the present attitudes and practices. It has been found that schools are still unprepared to foster democratic citizenship in children. Schooling for democratic citizenship cannot be achieved overnight. It is a gradual process that is still growing in Maltese primary schools and needs to be given further significance. Through the chapters, we have emphasised essential aspects of the topic corresponding to the key words below which are crucial for democratic citizenship to be endorsed. This thesis has been chosen since it is reasonable to instil the fundamentals for a democratic environment while the children are still young thus it meets the need of primary school children. It will also be of use to those involved in fostering democracy in primary schools and it will help them develop the right approach towards democratic citizenship.
