Abstract: The aim of this research project is to explore the importance of physical exercise in Down Syndrome children. A questionnaire was used for the research undertaken, which included 14 physiotherapist who work or used to work with these children. Physiotherapist were questioned because they are the experts in this subject as to explore what programmes are available, to see whether enough services are provided to children with Down Syndrome and their parents. Physiotherapist were also asked whether it is important for nurses who deal with Down Syndrome children to have adequate knowledge on how to continue care for children with hypotonia and to support the physiotherapists, and also what medical problems lead to a decrease in their ability to perform physical exercise in Down Syndrome children. From the study conducted, one can understand more why physical exercise is important for Down Syndrome children, as it helps to improve all areas of health in these children. It is not the nurses' profession to do the physiotherapist role but the nurse must be knowledgeable enough to support the physiotherapists' role and thus complete the nurses' role as to compliment the physiotherapist job, and also to integrate in care as a member of the multidisciplinary team. As a member of health care team, the nurse needs to be aware and knowledgeable about the physical exercise needed for a child with Down Syndrome as once admitted to the ward, most of the time the child has to be cared for by the nurse. Therefore, it is essential that nurses engaging in caring for these children are trained accordingly. The findings of this study are discussed in relation to the literature available. Appropriate recommendations are also given.
