Marine education for the late primary and the early secondary years

Abstract

The scope of this study is to provide teachers and learners of the late Primary (Years 4, 5, and 6) and the early Secondary (Forms 1 and 2) with worksheets and information which will help and give ideas how to organize fieldwork in a marine environment. The worksheets have been designed so as to be as "user-friendly" as possible. They will lead learners into becoming more aware of the various types of life found on our shores, of the interrelation between these organisms and of certain environmental problems facing our shores. The approach used has been a practical one. The dissertation seeks to identify the aims and objectives of Marine Education particular to these age groups. It includes teaching activities which should be carried out on on-site visits. Activities for remote preparation and follow up, together with relevant teaching aids are also included. All the material has been tested with teachers and learners of the respective classes. The last chapter includes an evaluation of the whole project.
