Abstract: The aim of our dissertation was to evaluate the use of portfolios in a primary and post-secondary science classroom. The research involved developing and creating a science portfolio with students in order to assess them in a fonnative way. In this study we hoped to provide key information about the use of portfolios in a science classroom and their effectiveness in the formative assessment of students. It also tries to shed light on the process involved in implementing a portfolio in the classroom, thus working in line with the National Minimum Curriculum's criteria regarding formative assessment.
