Supportive material for year three English language teaching

Abstract

The aim of the study is the designing of supportive material for year three English language teaching. The result is a set of eight worksheets, accompanied by audio-aids and a teacher's guide book The worksheets are based upon the communicative approach to language teaching. Furthermore, story is used as a vehicle to enhance English language learning through drama, games, task-based activities, poems, songs and rhymes. The research carried out consisted of consultation with teachers, regarding the present textbooks used in year three state schools and the level of their pupils' language skills. They were also asked to put forward suggestions apropos the potential worksheets. This was done through a questionnaire. Children were tested in the four language skills to obtain a more definite idea of the children's language needs. Since the results showed that children experience difficulty in all the language skills, but especially in speaking skills, much stress has been given to this aspect in the worksheets. The teachers who have implemented these worksheets in the classroom found them catering for the children's language needs, and helpful to them in English language teaching. Thus the worksheets seem to satisfy their aim.
