It is with a deep sense of gratitude that we have embarked upon this daunting project in honour of our very dear and esteemed friend and colleague, Rev. Salvino Caruana O.S.A., Emeritus Professor of Patrology at the Faculty of Theology of the University of Malta. Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) – an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery and his emphasis on God’s love – once stated that “gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul.” The diverse contributions by academics and friends from Malta and abroad bear witness that this festschrift is indeed a labour of gratitude and love, gratis et amoris.en_GB
