Abstract: An attempt is here made to investigate the causes of reading failures which derive primarily from physical handicaps. This study applies only to those children whose handicap does not prevent them from retaining a place in the 'normal' school. Therefore, this study concentrates on such handicaps as hearing and visual impairment, speech defects and physical handicaps. An attempt has also been made to describe the effect that social and family problems might have on the child's ability to acquire the skill of reading. In the course of this study, various methods of teaching reading have been described, and suggestions offered towards lessening the learning problems involved for those children who suffer from the above mentioned handicaps.
