Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to examine the learning of the listening skill in the Maltese context, with particular reference to the new German coursebook Zick Zack (Books 1 and 2), which will be analysed and evaluated. Also by means of a questionnaire distributed in May/June 1994, we will be looking at the teachers' and pupils' reactions to this new coursebook, as well as to their experiences of the teaching and learning of the German language in Malta, emphasizing the listening skill. In this study we also intend to provide a compilation of motivating listening activities in German as supplementary material for this coursebook for use with First Year to Fifth Year learners.
