Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the role and purpose of adult education as regards mathematics teaching with special emphasis on adult prison education. Continuing and adult education is becoming increasingly important in a world that is continuously being marked by changing technological and social processes. These theories became more evident from the research that we carried out on the ways and means for the teaching of Mathematics to adults and on prison education in general. In addition, we studied the local current situation at Corradino Correctional Facility through the works of Maltese educators taking part in the educational programme within this institution and with the help of some prison inmates who were willing to share their knowledge and experiences. Eventually, we came up with a set of four mathematical projects within the context of carpentry, cooking, refurbishing and hairdressing, which identify the mathematical concepts necessary in everyday life and which also take into account the local culture and employment needs. Moreover, these projects take into consideration the attitude of adult learners towards Mathematics and education in general. While teaching and learning mathematical concepts and skills is a priority, this programme also teaches valuable skills for life. In this way, Mathematics education is transformed into education for empowerment, since it gives these individuals a new step in life.
