Spiritual connectedness in institutionalised elderly

Abstract

Spiritual Connections are defined as relationships to self, others, higher power or the environment (Robinson et al 2003). Research studies validate that spiritual relationships play an important role in a person's wellbeing (Woods and lronson 1999, Kendall 1994). The aim of this qualitative study is to explore spiritual connectedness of institutionalized elderly. The interview schedule explored connectedness to family and others, and connectedness to God. Ten Maltese persons residing in a state institution were recruited with a response rate of 100%. The sample included 5 males and 5 females aged over 65 years of age. Two themes were identified from the data. These were, Interpersonal Connectedness with relatives, residents and members of staff and Connectedness to God through belief and religious practices. Respondents stated that these connections help them to cope in difficulties. Connections provide them with encouragement, thus helping them accept and see the positiveness of life situations. Recommendations address education, clinical practice and further research. These recommendations are made in order to improve spiritual care and thus increase connectedness in institutionalized elderly.
