Abstract: A Home Insurance policy is one that protects the buildings and/or the contents of the insured including third party liability. Additionally, the policy holder can opt for an all risk coverage which covers both the buildings and the contents together under one policy on an accidental damage basis. Moreover, the insured has the availability to include coverage for personal accident, personal belongings and legal services amongst others. By means of this study, the author aims to understand and determine the influencing awareness factors that lead people in deciding whether to buy a home insurance cover or not. In addition, the researcher, would like to determine whether Maltese homeowners are aware of what is covered under a home insurance policy. In this research, the author has made use of both primary and secondary data. The primary data was gathered through a questionnaire which was distributed amongst Maltese citizens. The aim of the questionnaire was to gather the individuals’ views and awareness on home insurance. The author was able to complete Chapter 2: Literature Review by using several forms of secondary data. From the results, the author concluded that there is lack of awareness in relation to the home insurance policy. The majority of the people that own such a policy, do so because of the obligation that is created from the bank in relation to their home loan. Only a few people know the extent of the cover that is provided by a home insurance policy. In order to test the theoretical understanding of the influencing awareness factors of home insurance cover, the data was made subject to the exploratory factor analysis. From this factor analysis, the author created the Home Insurance Awareness Model (HIAM). The author was also able to test the statistical significance between the demographics and the awareness of home insurance influenced by the factors that emerged from the exploratory factor analysis.
