Abstract: This dissertation gives a general overview of the past and present problems effecting Maltese theatre and theatrical culture. Subsequently, it examines possible practical solutions towards an improvement of local theatre in its various forms. Reference to the past theatrical generation is made in Francis Ebejer's interview and the comments on the answers he has given. This serves the purpose of examining what purpose theatre has been serving in various fields be they educational, spectacular or cultural. In this sense reference will be made to the existence or non-existence of evaluative techniques, the financial means available and the catering for the future. Reference is also made to the use of new and existing theatrical forms, while an insight into the educational aspect of well-planned theatre-in-education is explored. Theatrical spaces are sought beyond the existing ones, to create new opportunities in the theatre and to relieve the production load of the National Theatre. One other important aspect is the setting up of a structured and well-organised National Drama School as an alternative to the Manoel Theatre Academy of Dramatic Arts, and for the professional formation of theatre practitioners. A professional formation, which will embody them into a National Drama Company, whose formation and role are also examined.
