Abstract: This dissertation focuses on the factors influencing the writing of children in Year 5 with implications in the teaching of writing in later primary years. Chapters 1 and 2 examine the historical background to the teaching of English, and different writing approaches are analyzed with particular emphasis on the communicative approach. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the teachers' towards different writing approaches, and several attitude factors causing differences in children's writing are highlighted. The pupils' feedback on different writing approaches is also given importance. In Chapter 5 pedagogical strategies. mainly based on a communicative approach, in the teaching of writing in the later years of Maltese Primary Schools are suggested.
