| Abstract: | Information and Communication Technology is a radical pedagogical tool in education today. ICT integration in our schools utilises a wide array of software packages across the present curriculum. Software packages need to be evaluated to test their appropriateness and effectiveness in the specific educational context. This study focuses on the evaluation of two mathematics software packages: James Discovers Math and Mighty Maths Carnival Countdown. These are being used in Year 2 primary State classes. The research includes face-value software evaluations and observations of pupils using the mentioned software packages. The study aims to identify existing strengths and weaknesses of these software packages in the light of teachers' and pupils' opinions, together with the results obtained during the face-value evaluations. Furthermore, interviews conducted with teachers provide feedback about their opinions on the method of integration of ICT in Years 1, 2 and 3 and their use of software packages in their teaching methods. The literature review illustrates the development of ICT integration in education in Malta as compared to other countries. The dissertation proceeds by analysing, interpreting and discussing the feedback obtained through the research. |
