Abstract: This is an original study that analyses the influences of the family on the children in choosing a career. Theory has been drawn from vocational development according to Eli Ginzberg, Donald Super and others. For the majority of the people work is essential for personal fulfilment. The family undoubtedly influences the career choice of the children. The influence ·of the social class is also of importance especially in the rate of social mobility. Also of importance are the transmission of culture and socialization by the family. These have been found to influence the future social mobility of the children. The dissertation consists of seven chapters. The method of compilation of the original survey is described in Chapter 5. Chapter 6 analyses the data collected from the 200 respondents from the Maltese working population including influences of the family from birth, and the home environment. Data about childhood experiences, how the first preference was made, and how the actual choice, entry into training and into the career developed was also analysed. Chapter 7 is made un of the General conclusions about the hypothesis and how it was borne out.
