Abstract: This work attempts to investigate the situation of English teaching in State School infant classes (Yrs. 1-3). The first chapter seeks to determine the extent to which the teachers of these classes are being guided by the syllabus provided by the Education Department. The second chapter consists of an analysis of the language which the pupils concerned encounter in the first fifteen texts of the Ladybird Key Words Reading Scheme, this being the only scheme which provides linguistic material for English teaching throughout the first three years. An analysis of what actually takes place in the classroom is carried out in the final chapter, which consists of a report based on interviews with thirty-six teachers from four schools.
