| Abstract: | It is an undeniable truth that swimming is internationally regarded as one of the top most sporting activities in existence. This reality is not only based on the fact that swimming is one of the basic sport in the Olympic Games as well as in such other Games as the Pan-Am Games, the Asian Games and the Games of the Small States Of Europe. The truth lies in the fact that swimming is a lifelong sport, catering for all ages, easily affordable and totally beneficial to the full development of the human physique. However the concept of swimming has to be delineated between the Maltese Culture of Swimming for leisure in the summer season, and the more modem concept of all year round activity in enclosed heated fresh water pool. The study that we have undertaken attempts to show that there is a need for more awareness to the second type of swimming culture. That nowadays there is more propensity for such an activity can be derived from the new swimming facilities; the tendencies of parents to encourage their children to undertake such a sport; a better local organisation of swimming activities covering all months of the year; and a greater participation from children and youths in this field. This study attempts to point out that from research carried out locally the majority of people would like to see swimming flourish and agree that swimming should be included in the curriculum at Primary Level. The structure of teacher, pupil, venue and lesson is also discussed. Finally this study professes its suggestions as to how the above could be carried out in an efficient and professional manner. |
