Abstract: In this dissertation I will be surveying the literature on reading of the last twenty years or so. I will be looking at the physical, perceptual and linguistic components of reading. The affective and environmental-experimental components will also be discussed. Since the pupils are taught two languages in Maltese primary schools I will also be looking at the teaching of reading in a second language. After having a look at the local situation I will bring out some concluding comments on all that goes into the teaching of reading in the primary school. In order to avoid the awkwardness of using "he or she" to refer to the pupil or teacher, I shall use he/his throughout the course of this dissertation. No disrespect to the female sex is intended.
